Europe's First Home-Soil Orbit Belongs to a Startup, Not a Space Agency

A German startup just did something no Western European country, space agency, or company had ever managed: put a rocket into orbit from European soil. Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum lifted off from Andøya Space Center in northern Norway on September 5 at 10:12 p.m. local time, and a little over seven minutes later it was circling the planet on an elliptical path. The flight, named “Onward and Upward,” carried five cubesats and one non-deployable science experiment, all released as planned roughly two hours after launch. The milestone is real, but the headline that announced it hides a messy geographic argument that Hacker News spent 224 comments trying to untangle.

This was Spectrum’s second attempt, and the gap between the two flights tells the harder story. The first launch, “Going Full Spectrum” in March 2025, ended with the rocket crashing back to Earth less than a minute after liftoff; Isar’s investigation traced the failure to an unintended vent-valve opening and a loss of attitude control at the start of the roll maneuver. The road back took eighteen months of setbacks — a pressurization valve issue in January, bad weather and an intruding boat in March, a leaking pressure vessel that scrubbed an April 9 attempt, and a June 15 standdown over off-nominal fluid systems. When the second Spectrum finally flew, it needed a circularization burn out of its initial 112-by-311-mile orbit before it could deploy its payloads. Isar is building for scale, not just survival: the two-stage rocket hauls about 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit, its Munich factory is designed to produce more than 30 rockets a year, and the company has leased a Canadian launch pad for $150 million to fly from two continents.

The launch itself is a genuine first — but only under a very specific definition, and the commenters knew it. Russia’s Plesetsk Cosmodrome has been hosting orbital launches from European soil for six decades, and Europe’s own Ariane rockets fly from French Guiana, which is legally France but geographically South America. The cleanest phrasing came from an HN user who pointed out that “first rocket to launch from Europe outside Russia” would have been perfectly correct — which is exactly why the headline didn’t say it. As one commenter put it, “Europe is a vibe based concept.”

What makes this more than a trivia fight is what the definitional squabble reveals. Western Europe outsourced its orbital ambitions for half a century — first to the Sahara, then to the equator — because launching close to the equator is cheaper and because the politics of a shared launch site were easier than the politics of a national one. The cost of that arrangement was a quiet dependency: Europe could put satellites in orbit, but only by leaving Europe to do it. A private company launching from Norway, a NATO country that isn’t even in the EU, collapses that arrangement in a way ESA never could. The decoupling read was not lost on the thread — “the EU is further decoupling itself from the US… it’s not just a hypothetical anymore.”

The deeper point is how small the private orbital club still is. Only a handful of countries have commercial launch capacity that reaches orbit — the US, China, and New Zealand’s Rocket Lab being the established names — and Europe just joined from a startup’s second flight rather than a government program. Eighteen months ago Spectrum was a fireball over the Norwegian Sea. Now it is the reason “European soil” finally means what the headlines pretended it meant all along.
