You ask yourself why you bought that thing, why you snapped at that person, why you chose this job over that one — and the answer arrives, tidy and confident. The reading isn’t accurate; the interpreter is just very good at making things add up. For anyone who writes fiction, this is a gift: a character explaining her own choices is the most honest and most dishonest scene you can write, because people do not know their own reasons. And in daily life, the polite question to ask — of yourself and others — is: is that the cause, or the cover story?

The strangest side effects live in the split-brain case files. Some patients developed alien hand syndrome, where one hand seems to have its own agenda: one man pulled his pants up with one hand while the other hand pulled them down; another grabbed his wife with his left hand and had to be rescued by his own right hand coming to her aid.
